English Translation:

Surah Al-Fatiha, also known as the Opening or the Opener, is the first chapter of the Quran. It consists of 7 verses, making it one of the shortest chapters in the Quran. Despite its brevity, it holds immense significance in Islamic worship and daily prayers.

Each verse of Surah Al-Fatiha serves a specific purpose:

Verse 1 (Bismillah): This verse begins with the phrase "Bismillah al-Rahman al-Rahim," which translates to "In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful." 


Verse 2: In this verse, Allah is praised as the Almighty. It emphasizes His role as the universe's Creator and Sustainer and recognizes His sovereignty and power over everything in existence.


Verse 3: Here, Allah is described as "Ar-Rahman, Ar-Rahim" - the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. This verse highlights Allah's infinite mercy and compassion towards His creation, underscoring His love and kindness


Verse 4: This verse acknowledges Allah as the Master of the Day of Judgment. It reminds believers of the Day when all individuals will be held accountable for their actions, emphasizing Allah's ultimate authority and justice.


Verse 5: In this verse, believers declare their exclusive worship and reliance on Allah alone. It expresses the fundamental principle of Tawhid (monotheism), affirming that all acts of worship and seeking help are directed solely towards Allah.


Verse 6: Here, believers seek guidance from Allah to follow the straight path. It is a supplication for divine guidance and steadfastness on the right path, asking Allah to keep them on the righteous course.


Verse 7: The final verse of Surah Al-Fatiha serves as a conclusion, summarizing the supplication and emphasizing the importance of seeking guidance from Allah. It contrasts the path of those who have earned Allah's favor with the path of those who have gone astray or earned His wrath.

Overall, Surah Al-Fatiha encapsulates key themes of praise, gratitude, reliance on Allah, seeking guidance, and recognition of His sovereignty and mercy. It is recited in every unit of prayer (rak'ah) and serves as a foundational aspect of Islamic worship, reflecting the core beliefs and principles of Islam.

The Number Of Words And Letters In Al-Fatiha

Surah Fatiha, the opening chapter of the Quran, contains 29 words and 139 letters in its original Arabic text. Despite its comprehensive nature, it has great importance in Islamic worship, being recited in every unit of prayer. This short chapter covers deep themes of praise, gratitude, trust in God, seeking guidance, and recognizing His sovereignty and mercy. With its rhythmic and melodic recitation, Surah Fatiha serves as a fundamental aspect of Islamic prayer, embodying the essence of monotheism and establishing a direct connection between the worshiper and their Creator.


The Reason Why It Is Called Umm Al-Kitab

Surah al-Fatiha is called "Umm al-Kitab" (Mother of the Book) based on the tradition of Abu Hurairah. This hadith is recorded in Sahih Muslim, which is a collection of authentic sayings of the Prophet Mohammad (P.B.U.H). In this hadith, Holy Prophet (P.B.U.H) said:

«أُمُّ الْقُرْآنِ سَبْعٌ مِنَ الْمَثَانِي وَالْقُرْآنُ الْعَظِيمُ الَّذِي أُوتِيتُهُ»

The translation of this Hadith is: "The Quran which I have been given is greater and the seven often repeated verses are a great recitation."

In this Hadith, the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) refers to Surah Al-Fatiha as "Umm al-Quran" (the Mother of the Quran), highlighting its significance as the base and core of the Quran. While the term "Umm al-Kitab" (the Mother of the Book) is not directly mentioned in this Hadith, it is commonly understood to refer to Surah Al-Fatiha because of its centrality and significance as the opening chapter of the Quran. Surah Al-Fatiha is known as "Umm al-Kitab" because it provides the spiritual foundations and direction for the entire Quran, much like a mother provides nourishment and guidance for her children."

Glory Of the revealation of Surah Fatiha

This surah was revealed in Makkah or Madinah or both, It is narrated that the Prophet said to Hazrat Khadijah, may Allah be pleased with him: I am making a prayer in which it is called Iqra.  Say in the name of Allah, the Most Merciful, the Most Merciful, Praise be to Allah, Lord of the Worlds. This shows that this is the first Surah to be revealed, but from other traditions it is known that Surah Al-Iqra was revealed first. 


Virtues of Surah Al Fatiha

There are many virtues of this Surah in the hadiths. The Holy Prophet Said, no surah like it has been revealed in the Torah, the Gospel, or the Psalms (tirmidhi).  An angel descended from the sky and greeted the Holy Prophet and gave the good news of two such lights which were not given to any prophet before the Holy Prophet. One is Surah Fatiha, the other is the last two verses of Surah Baqarah (Muslim Sharif). Surah Fatiha is the cure of every disease (darmi). After reciting Surah Fatiha a hundred times, whoever ask for dua, Allah Ta'ala accepts it.
