Explanation of Surah Duha

 Introduction

This is the sound of the Lord of the East and West when He swears in the first verse. The word "Duha" in Arabic refers to mid-morning, the time of the day when the sun is just rising up from its farthest point at the horizon. So, this fourth verse and the word "Duha" tells us the start of the day, because the day in Arabic starts from mid-morning. The fifth and sixth verses directly address the Prophet (peace be upon him) and provide answers to the questions that were asked by the people.

Surah Duha is the 93rd chapter of the Holy Quran, consisting of 11 verses. This Surah was revealed in Makkah and it has a total of 20 verses. However, it is recounted that the chapter was revealed to Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) at the beginning of his divine mission. This is because some narrations from Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) indicate that he said that God did not speak to him for three days while he was fretful about his life with no immediate success and contentment in this world and the next.

I start my work with the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. These are the first few verses revealed to our Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) at a time when he was distressed and sad, and there was no other revelation for a couple of days.

"By the morning, God did not despise him and had never forgotten him. Everything was going to be alright and his past and future would be better than what he had now. This is a very important event for us. We will see why when we study this Surah. Every single verse and every single chapter in the Quran is important. It's always good to know the historical background of the chapters and their revelation.

‎بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَـٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ

1. By the morning brightness," وَالضُّحَىٰ

2. "And [by] the night when it covers with darkness," وَاللَّيْلِ إِذَا سَجَىٰ

3. "Your Lord has not taken leave of you, [O Muhammad], nor has He detested [you]."

مَا وَدَّعَكَ رَبُّكَ وَمَا قَلَىٰ

4. "And the Hereafter is better for you than the first [life]." وَلَلْآخِرَةُ خَيْرٌ لَّكَ مِنَ الْأُولَىٰ

5. "And your Lord is going to give you, and you will be satisfied." وَلَسَوْفَ يُعْطِيكَ رَبُّكَ فَتَرْضَىٰ

6. "Did He not find you an orphan and give [you] refuge?" أَلَمْ يَجِدْكَ يَتِيمًا فَآوَىٰ

7. "And He found you lost and guided [you]," وَوَجَدَكَ ضَالًّا فَهَدَىٰ

8. "And He found you poor and made [you] self-sufficient." وَوَجَدَكَ عَائِلًا فَأَغْنَىٰ

9. "So as for the orphan, do not oppress [him]." فَأَمَّا الْيَتِيمَ فَلَا تَقْهَرْ

10. "And as for the petitioner, do not repel [him]." وَأَمَّا السَّائِلَ فَلَا تَنْهَرْ

11."But as for the favor of your Lord, report [it]." وَأَمَّا بِنِعْمَةِ رَبِّكَ فَحَدِّثْ

HISTORICAL BACKGROUND OF SURAH DUHA

Early Life Of Prophet Mohammad (P.B.U.H)

Many also believe that it was a period of time following when the earlier Meccan verses had been revealed to the Prophet. This would have been a time when the early Muslim community was still in the process of growing and the Prophet himself had been subjected to taunts and insults by Meccans who could not understand his message and why they had been forsaken by their gods. These new verses were also seen as commendations and consolations from Allah, particularly given what the Prophet was going through at the time. This suggests a particularly strong focus upon the power of support from Allah and how never-ending it is: this can be seen from the constant reference to Allah in phrases like 'Your Guardian-Lord has not forsaken you. This constant reminder about the nature of Allah can really serve to illustrate to readers just how powerful the support from God is in the face of adversity.

Surah Ad-Duha (Chapter 93 of the Quran) was revealed to Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) during a period of spiritual peace, reassurance, and divine comfort. The circumstances surrounding its revelation shed light on its significance:

After the initial revelation to the Holy Prophet, there was a short pause in the revelation of the Qur'an. This hiatus caused the prophet some anxiety and uncertainty, as he was accustomed to receiving divine guidance. The absence of revelation and the challenges he faced from his opponents in Mecca led to his emotional turmoil.
